Manchester United midfielder Sammy McIlroy made his debut for Norhern Ireland in the one-all draw against Spain at Boothferry Park. The Spaniards went ahead after forty minutes of play when Joaquin “Quino” Sierra Vallejo passed to Francisco Aguilar whose cross found Jose Francisco Rojo who headed the ball beyond the reach of Northern Ireland and Tottenham Hotspur custodian Pat Jennings and into the net. Then, with eighteen minutes left of normal time, Sheffield Wednesday´s Dave Clements sent a free-kick to Manchester United ace George Best, who in turn passed the ball to Port Vale striker Sammy Morgan whose effort beat the away goalkeeper to make the final score one-all.
