Paul Ince

Newcastle United 1 Manchester United 1, St James´ Park, English Premier League, December 11, 1993. Table toppers Manchester United were denied a sixth consecutive Premier League away victory as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Newcastle United at St James´ Park. Paul Ince gave United the upper hand fourteen minutes after the resumption before Andy Cole equalised for The Magpies with nineteen minutes remaining on the referee´s watch.

In their previous five away matches in the Premier League, Alex Ferguson´s side had defeated Sheffield Wednesday, Everton, Manchester City, Coventry City, and Sheffield United and Alex Ferguson´s title chasers were expected by most to beat Newcastle United. Following a goalless first half at St James´ Park, the game came into life early in the second period when Manchester United midfield playmaker Paul Ince fired a low hard shot past Newcastle goalkeeper Mike Hooper and into the bottom left corner of the net to hand the defending Premier League champions the upper hand a minute before the hour mark. Kevin Keegan´s Newcastle worked hard for an equalising goal and The Magpies finally succeeded in the 71st minute of the clash as former Bristol City forward Andy Cole beat Manchester United and Denmark goaltender Peter Schmeichel with a header from a Rob Lee cross. The Old Trafford men came close to regaining their advantage during the closing stages of the contest but Roy Keane´s powerful shot went just a few inches wide of the right post. The away result against Newcastle meant that Manchester United were now topping the Premier League table with an impressive 49 points gained from twenty games played, as much as thirteen points ahead of second placed Leeds United and fourteen clear of Blackburn Rovers in third spot.
