Af­ter suc­cumb­ing to a sur­prise 3-2 loss at the hands of Tot­ten­ham Hot­spur at Old Traf­ford in their pre­vi­ous Fir­st Di­vi­sion fix­ture, Man­chester Uni­ted ma­naged a 2-2 draw ag­ainst New­castle Uni­ted at St Ja­mes´ Park cour­tesy of a goal each by Stu­art Pear­son and Bri­an Greenhoff.

Man­chester Uni­ted had beaten New­castle Uni­ted 4-3 in the cor­res­pond­ing fix­ture of the 1975-76 sea­son, but Tom­my Docherty´s si­de fou­nd it more dif­fi­cult this time ar­ound. The Mag­pies stormed in­to the lead wi­th a goal from loc­al born for­ward Paul Can­nell af­ter thir­teen min­utes of play, on­ly for Man­chester Uni­ted to turn the ga­me on its head thro­ugh goals from Eng­land in­ter­na­tion­als Stu­art Pear­son and Bri­an Green­hoff in the 17th and 32nd min­utes re­spect­ively. The ho­me te­am came back to equal­ise thanks to ex-Black­pool stri­ker Micky Burns who fou­nd the net in the 52nd min­ute, but the red shirts held on to se­cure a 2-2 draw.
