After succumbing to a surprise 3-2 loss at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford in their previous First Division fixture, Manchester United managed a 2-2 draw against Newcastle United at St James´ Park courtesy of a goal each by Stuart Pearson and Brian Greenhoff.
Manchester United had beaten Newcastle United 4-3 in the corresponding fixture of the 1975-76 season, but Tommy Docherty´s side found it more difficult this time around. The Magpies stormed into the lead with a goal from local born forward Paul Cannell after thirteen minutes of play, only for Manchester United to turn the game on its head through goals from England internationals Stuart Pearson and Brian Greenhoff in the 17th and 32nd minutes respectively. The home team came back to equalise thanks to ex-Blackpool striker Micky Burns who found the net in the 52nd minute, but the red shirts held on to secure a 2-2 draw.
