Jesse Lingard then added a second goal for the guests when the England U21 player rounded off a counter attack to score in the 38th minute of the clash, before Netherlands midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum netted for The Magpies with a well placed effort on 42 minutes. Following the half-time break, a cool spot kick from Serbian international marksman Aleksandar Mitrovic levelled the score for Newcastle in the 67th minute of the contest, only for Rooney to make it 3-2 to Manchester United when he hammered the ball past Republic of Ireland shot stopper Rob Elliot and into the back of the net from outside the eighteen-yard area twelve minutes later.
