The Old Trafford side had beaten Norwich 1-0 in the reverse meeting of the 1992-93 season courtesy of a goal from Mark Hughes and were narrow favourites to overcome City at Carrow Road. In their last five Premiership fixtures, Manchester United had defeated Liverpool, drawn against Aston Villa, Manchester City, and Arsenal, and lost to Oldham Athletic, whereas Norwich had overcome Sheffield United, Oldham Athletic, Nottingham Forest, and Aston Villa, and lost against Wimbledon. Born and brought up in nearby Oldham, Mark Robins had joined Manchester United as an apprentice on the 23rd of July 1986 and went on to sign his first professional contract with the club on the 22nd of December 1986. He was given his First Division baptism in a 1–1 draw against FA Cup holders Wimbledon at Plough Lane on the 22nd of October 1988, but he never managed to claim a regular place in the first team at Old Trafford. Accordingly, on the 14th of August 1992, Robins was transferred to Norwich City for a fee of £800,000 and the frontman marked his debut by scoring twice in a surprise 4-2 triumph against Arsenal at Highbury Stadium on the opening day of the first ever Premier League campaign.
