Man­chester Uni­ted were sit­ting in third place in the Fir­st Di­vi­sion ta­ble wi­th 37 points gain­ed from 25 ga­mes, whi­le Not­ting­ham For­est fou­nd them­selves in sixth po­s­i­tion wi­th 29 points col­lec­ted from 26 mat­ches. De­nis Law, who was back from in­jury and look­ing as sharp as ever, put Man­chester Uni­ted ahead when the in­dus­tri­ous for­ward roun­ded Not­ting­ham For­est shot stop­per Pe­ter Grum­mitt and slot­ted the ball in­to the back of the net in the third min­ute of the tie, on­ly for Alan Hin­ton to level the score for the hosts as he fired a blis­ter­ing shot from out­side the area pa­st away goal­keeper Pat Dun­ne and in­to the top right-hand cor­ner twelve min­utes la­ter. Hin­ton then made it 2-1 to the ho­me out­fit in the 23rd min­ute wi­th a goal which should have be­en dis­al­lowed for off­side be­fore The Law­man equal­ised a min­ute pa­st the ha­lf-hour ma­rk for the vis­it­ors to share the points.
