Portsmouth 1 Man United 4
Portsmouth 1 Manchester United 4, Fratton Park, English Premier League, November 28, 2009. After suffering a 1-0 home defeat to Benfica in the Champions League in midweek, Manchester United gained their tenth Premiership win of the 2009-10 season as they beat Portsmouth 4-1 away through a hat-trick by Wayne Rooney and a goal from Ryan Giggs.
Wayne Rooney scored a treble, including two penalties, while Ryan Giggs netted his 100th Premier League goal in Manchester United´s 4-1 win against bottom-of-the-table Portsmouth. Jamie O´Hara almost scored for the hosts during the early stages when he powered a shot from twenty yards out, but his effort was tipped over by Tomasz Kuszczak in the United goal. Manchester United gradually took over matters and Rooney handed the visitors the lead with a well executed penalty kick in the 25th minute of the tie after he had been brought down inside the eighteen-yard box by previous England U21 international midfielder Michael Brown. Seven minutes later, it was Portsmouth´s turn to be rewarded a penalty following a shirt pulling incident and former Hertha Berlin and Tottenham Hotspur playmaker Kevin-Prince Boateng converted the subsequent spot kick to level the score for Pompey. But three minutes into the second half, Wayne Rooney scored his second goal of the afternoon as the England striker slotted home an inch-perfect cross from Giggsy. And six minutes later, Wazza once again found the back of the net from the spot after Ryan Giggs had been fouled in the penalty area by Lyon loanee Frederic Piquionne. The final goal of the encounter arrived in the 87th minute of proceedings when Giggs magnificently curled a twenty-two-yard free-kick past Portsmouth shot stopper Asmir Begovic and into the bottom left corner of the net to secure a 4-1 away victory for Manchester United.
