Af­ter suf­fer­ing a 1-0 ho­me de­feat to Ben­fica in the Cham­pi­ons Lea­gue in mid­week, Man­chester Uni­ted gain­ed their tenth Pre­miership win of the 2009-10 sea­son as they be­at Ports­mouth 4-1 away thro­ugh a hat-trick by Way­ne Roo­ney and a goal from Ry­an Giggs. 

Way­ne Roo­ney sco­red a tre­ble, in­clud­ing two pen­al­ties, whi­le Ry­an Gig­gs net­ted his 100th Pre­mier Lea­gue goal in Man­chester United´s 4-1 win ag­ainst bot­tom-of-the-ta­ble Ports­mouth. Jam­ie O´Hara al­most sco­red for the hosts dur­ing the early sta­ges when he power­ed a shot from twenty yards out, but his ef­fort was tipped over by To­masz Kusz­czak in the Uni­ted goal. Man­chester Uni­ted gradu­ally took over mat­ters and Roo­ney han­ded the vis­it­ors the lead wi­th a well ex­ecuted pen­alty kick in the 25th min­ute of the tie af­ter he had be­en bro­ught down in­side the eight­een-yard box by pre­vi­ous Eng­land U21 in­ter­na­tion­al mid­fielder Mi­chael Bro­wn. Sev­en min­utes la­ter, it was Portsmouth´s turn to be re­war­ded a pen­alty fol­low­ing a shirt pulling in­cid­ent and for­mer Her­tha Ber­lin and Tot­ten­ham Hot­spur play­maker Kev­in-Prince Boa­teng con­ver­ted the sub­sequent spot kick to level the score for Pom­pey. But three min­utes in­to the sec­ond ha­lf, Way­ne Roo­ney sco­red his sec­ond goal of the af­ter­noon as the Eng­land stri­ker slot­ted ho­me an inch-per­fect cross from Giggsy. And six min­utes la­ter, Waz­za once ag­ain fou­nd the back of the net from the spot af­ter Ry­an Gig­gs had be­en fouled in the pen­alty area by Ly­on loanee Fre­der­ic Piquionne. The fi­nal goal of the en­counter ar­rived in the 87th min­ute of pro­ceed­ings when Gig­gs mag­nificently curled a twenty-two-yard free-kick pa­st Ports­mouth shot stop­per As­mir Be­gov­ic and in­to the bot­tom left cor­ner of the net to se­cure a 4-1 away vic­tory for Man­chester Uni­ted.
