Man­chester Uni­ted ma­naged to qual­i­fy for the Cham­pi­ons Lea­gue Quart­er-Fi­nals af­ter beat­ing Rap­id Vi­enna by two goals to nil be­fore a 45,000 crowd at Ernst Hap­pel Sta­dium. The Eng­lish Pre­mier Lea­gue te­am nudged them­selves in front in the 24th min­ute of the tie when Ry­an Gig­gs latched on to a neat pass from Eric Can­tona be­fore bril­liantly put­ting the ball pa­st the on­com­ing Mi­chael Kon­sel and in­to the back of the goal. And wi­th eight­een min­utes left to go, Man­chester Uni­ted doubled their ad­vant­age as an ex­cel­lent ball by Da­vid Beck­ham fou­nd Can­tona who struck ho­me from clo­se ran­ge.
