Al­though Man­chester Uni­ted had beaten Re­al Mad­rid 1-0 at Old Traf­ford thanks to a goal by Geor­gie Best in the fir­st leg the pre­vi­ous month, they fou­nd the go­ing tough in the fir­st ha­lf of the re­turn mat­ch ag­ainst The Me­ringues at San­ti­ago Bern­abeu. Jose Mar­tinez San­chez, bet­ter known as Pirri, gave Re­al Mad­rid the lead when the mid­field play­maker head­ed ho­me a free-kick taken by wing­er Aman­cio Am­aro af­ter 32 min­utes be­fore Fran­cisco Gento made it 2-0 to the white shirts in the 41st min­ute of the clash. An own goal from Re­al Mad­rid mid­fielder Ig­nacio Zoco re­duced the de­fi­cit for The Reds in the 43rd min­ute, but Mi­guel Munoz´s men sco­red ag­ain as Aman­cio ham­mered the ball pa­st away shot stop­per Al­ex Step­ney two min­utes la­ter. In the sec­ond ha­lf, Eng­land in­ter­na­tion­al Da­vid Sad­ler, who had be­en switched from de­fence to at­tack, pulled an­oth­er goal back for Man­chester Uni­ted wi­th a clo­se ran­ge ef­fort in the 75th min­ute, whi­le Bill Foulk­es showed that he had a re­al sense of oc­ca­sion when the ex­per­i­enced cent­ral de­fender con­ver­ted an ex­cel­lent pass from Best wi­th twelve min­utes left of the en­thralling en­counter in Mad­rid. Af­ter knock­ing out Gen­er­al Franco´s Re­al Mad­rid, Man­chester Uni­ted would now take on Por­tuguese gi­ants Ben­fica in the fi­nal at Wemb­ley Sta­dium.
