Wi­th com­pet­i­tion for fir­st te­am places at Man­chester Uni­ted ex­tremely fierce, Rich­ard Wel­lens de­cided to move to Black­pool at the back end of the 1999-2000 cam­paign. A ver­sat­ile cent­ral mid­fielder blessed wi­th the abil­ity to switch back and forth be­tween de­fense and of­fense, he pro­ceeded to play al­most 200 Foot­ball Lea­gue ga­mes for The Tan­ger­ines be­fore he joi­ned for­ces wi­th Great­er Man­chester te­am Old­ham Ath­let­ic at the start of the 2005-06 sea­son. Af­ter spend­ing a couple of years at Bound­ary Park, the hard la­bour­ing play­er sig­ned for Don­caster Rov­ers who he help­ed gain pro­mo­tion to the Cham­pi­on­ship in 2008. Wel­lens then ap­peared for sev­er­al clubs, in­clud­ing Lei­cester City, Ips­wich To­wn, and Shrews­bury To­wn, be­fore he was ap­poin­ted man­ager at Old­ham Ath­let­ic on the 25th of Septem­ber 2017.
