The Dutch dominated possession from the start and Manchester United marksman Robin van Persie recorded the first goal of the clash when he headed a cross from Arjen Robben into the bottom right-hand corner of the net in the sixth minute of play. The provider scored himself when he fired the ball into the top right corner to double the advantage for the home team in the 35th minute of the Sunday game, and seven minutes later Klaas Jan Huntelaar stretched the lead further with a right-footed shot which flew into the bottom right corner. Following the break, PSV Eindhoven defender Jeffrey Bruma made it 4-0 to the hosts on 78 minutes before Robben and Huntelaar completed their braces in the 82nd and 89th minute of the contest respectively. Galatasaray midfielder Wesley Sneijder nearly netted a seventh goal for the Netherlands in stoppage time, but his free-kick went just wide.
