While at Manchester United, Sam Johnstone was shipped out on loan to English Football League One side Oldham Athletic at the end of the 2010-11 campaign in order to acquire some much needed first team experience and he made two pre-season appearances for The Latics under Boundary Park gaffer Paul Dickov before he had further loan spells with Scunthorpe United, Walsall, Yeovil Town, Doncaster Rovers, Preston North End, and Aston Villa. Johnstone eventually signed a four-year contract with newly relegated West Bromwich Albion for a transfer fee estimated to be in the region of £6.5 million at the beginning of the 2018-19 season, and the net custodian was given his competitive debut for The Baggies by recently appointed head coach Darren Moore in a 2-1 Championship defeat to Bolton Wanderers at The Hawthorns on the 4th of August 2018.
