Sheff Wed 1 Man United 3
Sheffield Wednesday 1 Manchester United 3, Hillsborough Stadium, English Football League First Division, September 17, 1969. An early goal from Brian Kidd and a late brace by George Best gave Manchester United a well-deserved 3-1 win over Danny Williams´s Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.
Wilf McGuinness had taken over the managerial reigns from legendary Manchester United boss Sir Matt Busby before the beginning of the 1969-70 campaign, but The Reds had experienced an indifferent start to the new season, with three victories, four draws, and three defeats from their opening ten fixtures. In the away meeting against Sheffield Wednesday, Manchester United established an early advantage when Brian Kidd converted a brilliantly delivered corner from George Best on eleven minutes, only for the home team to equalise through Graham Pugh shortly afterwards. As the scoreboard clock ticked down, however, Manchester United had two goals in quick succession when Best beat Sheffield Wednesday custodian Peter Springett with a left-foot shot after 82 minutes before he completed his brace by unleashing an unstoppable effort into the net a minute later. Sheffield Wednesday Team: Peter Springett, Kenneth Burton, Wilf Smith, Sam Ellis, Archibald Irvine, Graham Pugh, Tommy Craig, Gerry Young, Johnny Fantham, David Ford, Alan Warboys. Substitutes: None. Manchester United Team: Alex Stepney, John Fitzpatrick, Tony Dunne, Ian Ure, Francis Burns, David Sadler, Willie Morgan, Bobby Charlton, Alan Gowling, Brian Kidd, George Best.
