Man­chester Uni­ted ma­naged to achieve a cred­it­able 3-3 draw ag­ainst Shef­field Wed­nesday at Hills­bor­ough on Box­ing Day 1992. The Man­cuni­ans were three goals down by the 62nd min­ute, but a double by Bri­an Mc­Clair and a goal from Eric Can­tona saved the vis­it­ors from the jaws of defeat.

Man­chester Uni­ted staged a sen­sa­tion­al come­back as they struck back from be­ing three goals down wi­th little more than 20 min­utes re­maining. Shef­field Wed­nesday stormed in­to an early lead when Eng­land in­ter­na­tion­al Da­vid Hirst un­leashed a low and power­ful shot bey­ond the reach of away goal­keeper Pe­ter Schmei­chel and in­to the bot­tom left-hand cor­ner of the net wi­th less than two min­utes gone on the clock at Hills­bor­ough, and just four min­utes la­ter The Owls had their sec­ond goal of the day as ex-Crys­tal Pal­ace fa­vour­ite Ma­rk Bright sco­red wi­th a fine clo­se-ran­ge fin­ish. Then, in the sec­ond ha­lf of the en­counter, Re­pub­lic of Ire­land mid­fielder John Sherid­an fou­nd the back of the net a couple of min­utes pa­st the hour ma­rk when he be­at Schmei­chel from the edge of the six-yard area to hand Shef­field Wed­nesday a 3-0 ad­vant­age, but Man­chester Uni­ted fi­nally woke up af­ter 67 min­utes as Bri­an Mc­Clair head­ed ho­me a cross de­livered by Lee Sharpe. And wi­th some 10 min­utes left of the clash, Mc­Clair hit the tar­get ag­ain from an­oth­er Sharpe cross, and on­ly four min­utes af­ter­wards for­mer Leeds Uni­ted ace Eric Can­tona equal­ised from yet an­oth­er cross by the mid­field play­maker.
