New boy Shinji Ka­gawa sco­red the on­ly goal of the mat­ch as Man­chester Uni­ted edged out Shang­hai Shen­hua by 1-0. Ka­gawa net­ted the win­ner in the 68th min­ute when he re­ceived the ball from Bebe and fired a power­ful shot in­to the net from a few yards out. 

Sum­mer sign­ing Nick Pow­ell, who was han­ded his fir­st start by Man­chester Uni­ted man­ager Sir Al­ex Fer­guson, al­most sco­red his fir­st goal for his new club in the 22nd min­ute of ac­tion, but his drive went wide. Shang­hai Shen­hua also had their mo­ments in the fir­st ha­lf and Aus­trali­an stri­ker Joel Grif­fiths missed a good chan­ce to net for the hosts when his fierce ef­fort was bloc­ked by Uni­ted goal­keeper An­ders Linde­gaard af­ter 42 min­utes. Man­chester Uni­ted star­ted to dom­in­ate pos­ses­sion fol­low­ing the re­sump­tion, tho­ugh, and early in the sec­ond pe­riod Ja­pan in­ter­na­tion­al Shinji Ka­gawa set up Italy U21 for­ward Fe­d­erico Ma­cheda, but his fe­ro­cious shot went straight at Shengjiong Qiu in the Shang­hai Shen­hua goal. Then, in the 68th min­ute of the pre-sea­son ga­me, Uni­ted ev­entually took the lead as Bebe, who came on for Dav­ide Petrucci on 46 min­utes, ran in­to the pen­alty area and played the ball back to Ka­gawa who ham­mered ho­me from clo­se ran­ge. Man­chester Uni­ted should have doubled their tally in the 77th min­ute of the clash, but Oli­veira An­der­son re­place­ment Paul Scho­les could on­ly head over the cross­bar.
