Shanghai 0 Manchester U 1
Shanghai Shenhua 0 Manchester United 1, Shanghai Stadium, Friendly Match, July 25, 2012. New boy Shinji Kagawa scored the only goal of the match as Manchester United edged out Shanghai Shenhua by 1-0. Kagawa netted the winner in the 68th minute when he received the ball from Bebe and fired a powerful shot into the net from a few yards out.
Summer signing Nick Powell, who was handed his first start by Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, almost scored his first goal for his new club in the 22nd minute of action, but his drive went wide. Shanghai Shenhua also had their moments in the first half and Australian striker Joel Griffiths missed a good chance to net for the hosts when his fierce effort was blocked by United goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard after 42 minutes. Manchester United started to dominate possession following the resumption, though, and early in the second period Japan international Shinji Kagawa set up Italy U21 forward Federico Macheda, but his ferocious shot went straight at Shengjiong Qiu in the Shanghai Shenhua goal. Then, in the 68th minute of the pre-season game, United eventually took the lead as Bebe, who came on for Davide Petrucci on 46 minutes, ran into the penalty area and played the ball back to Kagawa who hammered home from close range. Manchester United should have doubled their tally in the 77th minute of the clash, but Oliveira Anderson replacement Paul Scholes could only head over the crossbar.
