Man­chester Uni­ted won their fifth suc­cess­ive Pre­mier Lea­gue en­counter as they over­came South­ampton by 2-0 at St Mary´s. Ruud van Nistel­rooy put Uni­ted in­to the lead in the 15th min­ute be­fore Ry­an Gig­gs doubled the ad­vant­age just sev­en min­utes later. 

Man­chester Uni­ted went ahead as Ruud van Nistel­rooy con­ver­ted a low cross from Ga­ry Ne­ville on fif­teen min­utes whi­le Ry­an Gig­gs ad­ded a sec­ond goal for the vis­it­ing si­de in the twenty-sec­ond min­ute. The South­ampton play­ers shouted for a pen­alty-kick when Roy Ke­ane bro­ught down fel­low mid­field man Jo Tessem in­side the eight­een-yard area three min­utes pa­st the ha­lf-hour ma­rk, but mat­ch of­fi­cial Phil Dowd just waved play on. As the fir­st ha­lf went in­to its lat­ter sta­ges, Man­chester Uni­ted and Fran­ce goal­keeper Fa­bi­en Bar­thez suf­fered an in­jury and the thirty-one-year-old ec­cent­ric was re­placed by deputy shot stop­per Roy Car­roll. The So­uth Coast­ers had their mo­ments in the sec­ond frame, but the ho­me stri­kers were denied by Car­roll on each oc­ca­sion. Then, late in the ga­me, Antti Niemi be­came the sec­ond goal­keeper of the mat­ch to be car­ried off on a stretch­er af­ter sus­tain­ing an in­jury wi­th on­ly four min­utes left of nor­mal time.
