Stoke 0 Manchester Utd 1
Stoke City 0 Manchester United 1, Old Trafford, English Football League First Division, August 30, 1975. Following a 1-1 draw against fellow early pacesetters Coventry City at Old Trafford, Manchester United edged out Stoke City 1-0 in front of a crowd of almost 35,000 spectators at Victoria Ground.
Manchester United shot stopper Alex Stepney was absolutely outstanding between the sticks as his side beat Tony Waddington´s Stoke City 1-0 away. Manchester United began the better and went into an early lead when Stoke City and England U23 international defender Alan Dodd was unlucky enough to put the ball past Peter Shilton and into his own net in the 15th minute of the tussle. Ian Moores came on for former Sheffield United midfield player Geoff Salmons during the second period, but neither him nor his teammates were able to find the back of the net for the Staffordshire club and the match ended with a win for Manchester United. Unfortunately, the First Division encounter at Victoria Ground was marred by serious crowd trouble with several arrests being made by the local police. After winning the game against The Potters, Manchester United remained at the top of the League Division One table with nine points gained from five matches played, one point in front of FA Cup holders West Ham United and two points ahead of Queens Park Rangers, Everton, and Leeds United. Down at the very bottom of the standings were Birmingham City and Sheffield United who had only one point each.
