Sunderland 1 Manchester United 5, Roker Park, English Football League First Division, November 7, 1981. Frank Stapleton scored a brace as First Division leaders Manchester United beat bottom-of-the-table Sunderland 5-1 to go three points clear of second placed Ipswich Town who suffered a shock 3-2 loss to Division One new boys Swansea City at Portman Road.

Manchester United gained their fourth First Division win on the trot as they defeated Sunderland 5-1 away. Kevin Moran put United in front in the 20th minute of the clash, only for Stan Cummins to equalise for Sunderland seven minutes ahead of the break. Manchester United raised their game several notches after the interval and Ron Atkinson´s men regained their advantage nine minutes into the second half courtesy of a goal by recently signed midfielder Bryan Robson. Former Arsenal striker Frank Stapleton then found the net twice for The Reds in the 67th and 71st minutes before Garry Birtles put the icing on the cake with a late goal in the final minute of normal time. Alas, the early results under Atkinson proved to be false dawn as United finished the 1981-82 season in third place, as much as nine points adrift of champions Liverpool. As regards Sunderland, The Rokerites avoided relegation to the Second Division by two points at the expense of the once mighty Leeds United.
