Manchester United had outhustled West Ham United to the tune of a 4-0 score at Old Trafford in their opening encounter of the 2017-18 season thanks to a brace each side of the interval from ex-Everton marksman Romelu Lukaku and two late goals from Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba respectively. Lukaku put United in front in the 33rd minute of proceedings before the former Goodison Park striker completed his brace for the hosts seven minutes into the second half. And with three minutes left of the clash, Martial added a third goal for Manchester United while Pogba made it 4–0 to the home side in the 90th minute. The Swans, meanwhile, had played out an entertaining, but goalless, draw with Southampton at St Mary´s Stadium. At Liberty Stadium, The Reds got themselves ahead on 45 minutes when a powerful header from Pogba was tipped on to the crossbar by Swansea City shot stopper Lukasz Fabianski and Ivory Coast international Eric Bailly was there to put the ball into the net from close range. After the break, Lukaku netted a second goal for Manchester United with a superb finish from a few yards out in the 80th minute of the match before Paul Pogba registered a third for the visiting side two minutes later. Then, with six minutes remaining of normal time, Marcus Rashford replacement Anthony Martial rounded off the scoring to make it 4-0 to the men in red shirts. Following the demolition of Swansea City, Manchester United were now topping the Premier League table on goal difference.
