Billy Meredith

Wil­li­am Henry Mere­dith, born Chirk, Wales, Ju­ly 30, 1874. Billy Mere­dith star­ted out wi­th loc­al out­fit Chirk be­fore the out­side for­ward pro­ceeded to play for North­wich Vic­tor­ia, Man­chester City, and Man­chester Uni­ted. Dur­ing his long and ex­cep­tion­al foot­balling ca­reer, the now le­gendary marks­man ma­naged to score an im­press­ive 169 goals in 681 Foot­ball Lea­gue ap­pear­ances be­tween 1890 and 1924. 

Af­ter suc­cess­ful spells wi­th Chirk and North­wich Vic­tor­ia, Billy Mere­dith sig­ned for Man­chester City as a pro­fes­sion­al in 1894 and he played an im­port­ant part in the si­de that be­at Bol­ton Wanderes in the 1904 FA Cup Fi­nal at Crys­tal Pal­ace where he sco­red the win­ner mid­way thro­ugh the fir­st ha­lf. Un­for­tu­nately, Mere­dith was sus­pen­ded along wi­th the rest of the City squad two years la­ter af­ter the Hyde Road club had be­en fou­nd guilty of fin­an­cial ir­reg­u­lar­it­ies. Fol­low­ing 129 goals in 339 Foot­ball Lea­gue mat­ches for Man­chester City, he joi­ned neigh­bor­ing rivals Man­chester Uni­ted at the end of the 1905-06 sea­son and was han­ded his fir­st te­am de­but by Ern­est Man­gnall in a 1-0 Fir­st Di­vi­sion tri­umph over As­ton Vil­la at Bank Street on New Year´s Day 1907. The Welsh­man re­gistered his fir­st goal for Uni­ted in a 4-1 Di­vi­sion One vic­tory at ho­me to Sto­ke City on the 9th of the fol­low­ing month and went on to hit five goals in 18 fir­st class ga­mes dur­ing his in­aug­ur­al year wi­th the club. All in all, the stri­ker re­cor­ded 35 goals in 303 Fir­st Di­vi­sion out­ings for Man­chester Uni­ted be­fore he re­turned to for­mer em­ploy­ers Man­chester City on a free trans­fer in the sum­mer of 1921. As a Uni­ted play­er, he won the Fir­st Di­vi­sion in 1907–08 and 1910–11, the FA Cup in 1908–09, and the FA Char­ity Shield in 1908 and 1911. A Welsh in­ter­na­tion­al, he amassed el­ev­en goals in 48 seni­or ap­pear­ances for the coun­try of his bir­th af­ter ma­king his de­but in a 2-2 Brit­ish Ho­me Cham­pi­on­ship draw wi­th Ire­land in front of 6,000 spec­tat­ors at Solitude Gro­und in Bel­fast on the 16th of Mar­ch 1895. Mere­dith was also a mem­ber of the Welsh te­ams which won the Brit­ish Ho­me Cham­pi­on­ship in 1907 and 1920.
