Scot­tish centre for­ward Jim­my Turn­bull, who had net­ted 14 goals in 31 fir­st te­am ap­pear­ances for Man­chester Uni­ted dur­ing the cham­pi­on­ship win­ning sea­son of 1907-08, opened the scor­ing ac­count for The Reds in the 23rd min­ute of the en­counter when the im­press­ive stri­ker head­ed ho­me a cross from Welsh out­side for­ward Billy Mere­dith and the Ban­nock­burn born play­er ad­ded a sec­ond goal for the Bank Street out­fit on­ly five min­utes la­ter to hand his si­de a com­fort­able 2-0 lead at the ha­lf-time break. Man­chester Uni­ted con­tin­ued to pour for­ward fol­low­ing the re­sump­tion of ac­tion and Ern­est Mangnall´s troops were re­war­ded when for­mer Barns­ley wing­er Ge­orge Wall be­at Queens Park Ran­gers shot stop­per Char­lie Shaw in the 56th min­ute of the tie be­fore Turn­bull notched up his third goal of the af­ter­noon wi­th fif­teen min­utes re­maining of the con­test. Dur­ing the lat­ter sta­ges of the clash, the un­for­tu­nate Jim­my Ban­nis­ter had to leave the field wi­th an in­jury and Man­chester Uni­ted fin­ished the mat­ch at Stam­ford Bridge re­duced to ten play­ers. As re­gards Jim­my Turn­bull, the re­li­able and con­sist­ent marks­man would go on to amass 45 goals in 78 fir­st class ga­mes for Man­chester Uni­ted be­fore he was trans­ferred to Sec­ond Di­vi­sion club Brad­ford Park Av­en­ue in Septem­ber 1910.
