Fol­low­ing the ha­lf-time re­fresh­ments, the West Ham play­ers raised their ga­me to new and un­pre­ced­en­ted heights and Tom­my Cald­well ul­ti­mately hit the win­ning goal for Syd King´s men when the skil­ful and pacey flank for­ward ham­mered the ball ho­me from clo­se ran­ge wi­th just a couple of min­utes re­maining of the en­counter in East Lon­don. Else­where, Burn­ley be­at Cov­entry City 5–0 at Turf Moore, Der­by Coun­ty de­feated Ever­ton by the same score at Base­ball Gro­und, Wol­ves lost 2-0 ag­ainst Chel­sea at Mo­lineux, Middles­brough were beaten 3-0 by Black­burn Rov­ers at Ayre­some Park, New­castle Uni­ted over­came Hull City 3–2 at St Ja­mes´ Park, Dar­ling­ton were de­feated 3-0 by Swin­don To­wn at Feethams, and Brad­ford City edged out Grimsby To­wn 1-0 at Val­ley Parade.
