West Ham 2 Manchester U 1
West Ham United 2 Manchester United 1, Boleyn Ground, English FA Cup Third Round, February 25, 1911. Manchester United suffered a surprise defeat to West Ham United in the third round of the FA Cup as they were beaten 2-1 by The Irons. Danny Shea and Tommy Caldwell scored the goals for West Ham, while Sandy Turnbull found the net for The Reds.
The Mancunians had been knocked out by local rivals Burnley in the first round of the FA Cup the previous season, whereas West Ham United had been eliminated by cross-city adversaries Queens Park Rangers in the third round. First Division table toppers Manchester United dominated the early skirmishes at Boleyn Ground, but the ambitious Southern Football League side gradually came more into the match and in the 17th minute of the tussle, Danny Shea provided The Hammers with the lead when the Wapping born inside forward powered the ball past former Bolton Wanderers shot stopper Hugh Edmonds and into the goal, only for Scottish inside forward Sandy Turnbull to equalise for Manchester United five minutes later as the lethal marksman headed a well executed flag-kick by wily winger George Wall into the back of the net. Following the half-time refreshments, the West Ham players raised their game to new and unprecedented heights and Tommy Caldwell ultimately hit the winning goal for Syd King´s men when the skilful and pacey flank forward hammered the ball home from close range with just a couple of minutes remaining of the encounter in East London. Elsewhere, Burnley beat Coventry City 5–0 at Turf Moore, Derby County defeated Everton by the same score at Baseball Ground, Wolves lost 2-0 against Chelsea at Molineux, Middlesbrough were beaten 3-0 by Blackburn Rovers at Ayresome Park, Newcastle United overcame Hull City 3–2 at St James´ Park, Darlington were defeated 3-0 by Swindon Town at Feethams, and Bradford City edged out Grimsby Town 1-0 at Valley Parade.
