Hol­land, who had be­come the fir­st Euro­pean te­am to qual­i­fy for the 2014 Wor­ld Cup in Brazil when they be­at An­dorra by 2-0 at Es­tadi Comun­al on the 10th of Septem­ber of 2013 thanks to a sec­ond ha­lf brace from Robin van Per­sie, dom­in­ated the en­counter wi­th Hun­gary from start to fin­ish. Van Per­sie re­cor­ded the fir­st goal of the clash af­ter 16 min­utes wi­th a clo­se ran­ge head­er, be­fore mid­fielder Kev­in St­root­man ad­ded a sec­ond when he nod­ded ho­me in the 25th min­ute. There was more to come as Jere­main Lens made it 3-0 on 38 min­utes, whi­le Van Per­sie net­ted the fourth goal of the tie one min­ute be­fore the in­ter­val. Fol­low­ing the re­start, for­mer PSV Eind­hoven wing­er Balasz Dz­sudz­sak sco­red a con­sol­a­tion for Hun­gary from the spot just two min­utes in­to the sec­ond ha­lf, on­ly for Van Per­sie to re­store the ad­vant­age for the or­ange shirts wi­th a cool fin­ish in­side the eight­een-yard box six min­utes la­ter. Hun­gari­an de­fender Sz­il­ard De­vec­seri then put the ball in­to his own net in the 65th min­ute, and dur­ing the clos­ing sta­ges Ra­fael van der Vaart and Ar­jen Rob­ben roun­ded off the scor­ing wi­th a goal each to se­cure a 8-1 vic­tory.
