Wales went ahead with­in the fir­st min­ute when Ry­an Gig­gs sent a bril­liant thro­ugh ball to Dean Saun­ders who put the ball pa­st San Marino goal­keeper Stefano Muc­ci­oli and in­to the far bot­tom cor­ner of the net. The Welsh doubled their lead af­ter 26 min­utes as Ma­rk Hug­hes head­ed ho­me a Ma­rk Pem­bridge cor­ner and then ad­ded two more goals be­fore the break thanks to Andy Melville and John Robin­son who fou­nd the net in the 34th and 44th min­utes re­spect­ively. Fol­low­ing the re­start, Hug­hes sco­red the fifth goal of the day nine min­utes in­to the sec­ond ha­lf be­fore Saun­ders net­ted a sixth in the 77th min­ute to make the fi­nal sco­reline read 6-0 in fa­vour of The Dragons.
