Wales went ahead within the first minute when Ryan Giggs sent a brilliant through ball to Dean Saunders who put the ball past San Marino goalkeeper Stefano Muccioli and into the far bottom corner of the net. The Welsh doubled their lead after 26 minutes as Mark Hughes headed home a Mark Pembridge corner and then added two more goals before the break thanks to Andy Melville and John Robinson who found the net in the 34th and 44th minutes respectively. Following the restart, Hughes scored the fifth goal of the day nine minutes into the second half before Saunders netted a sixth in the 77th minute to make the final scoreline read 6-0 in favour of The Dragons.
