Germany 4 England 1
Miroslav Klose gave Germany the lead on 20 minutes as he latched on to a long goal-kick from Manuel Neuer to score the opening goal of the tie before Lukas Podolski made it 2-0 after 32 minutes when he found the net with a low effort. Matthew Upson managed to put the hard working England team back in the clash, though, when he headed a good cross by Steven Gerrard past the German goalkeeper only eight minutes before the half-time signal. The Three Lions should have been awarded a second goal a minute later, however, when Frank Lampard’s chip shot bounced off the crossbar and behind the chalk, but the nearsighted referee just waved the play on. Although England came close to level the score on several occasions during the second half, Thomas Mueller ended their hopes with two goals in three minutes to hand Germany a 4-1 triumph.
