Man­chester City 2 Man­chester Uni­ted 3, Eti­had Sta­dium, FA Cup Fourth Ro­und, Jan­uary 8, 2012. Man­chester Uni­ted mo­ved in­to the FA Cup Fourth Ro­und af­ter beat­ing Man­chester City. Two goals by Way­ne Roo­ney and one from Dan­ny Wel­beck in the fir­st ha­lf saw Uni­ted run­ning out win­ners by 3-2 in a con­tro­ver­sial FA Cup Third Ro­und ga­me at Eastlands.

Af­ter be­ing soundly beaten 3-0 by New­castle Uni­ted at St James´s Park in the Pre­mier Lea­gue four days earli­er, Man­chester Uni­ted took on FA Cup hold­ers Man­chester City at East­lands in the Third Ro­und of the FA Cup. Uni­ted had to man­age with­out Chris Small­ing be­cause of in­jury, whi­le City were mis­sing the ser­vices of Kolo and Yaya Tou­re due to in­ter­na­tion­al duty. Way­ne Roo­ney put Man­chester Uni­ted in­to an early lead wi­th a su­perb head­er af­ter ten min­utes and then, in the el­ev­enth min­ute, Vin­cent Kom­pany was giv­en his march­ing or­ders by ref­er­ee Chris Foy for a tough chal­lenge on Lu­is Nani. And as the fir­st pe­riod wore on, Dan­ny Wel­beck be­at Nigel de Jong to the ball in or­der to double United´s ad­vant­age on thirty-nine min­utes be­fore Roo­ney con­ver­ted a pen­alty to make it 3-0 to the vis­it­ors a min­ute la­ter. Re­fus­ing to give up, Man­chester City fi­nally ma­naged to hit back three min­utes af­ter the break as Alek­sandar Kolarov fou­nd the net wi­th a fierce free-kick from twenty-five yards out. A min­ute be­fore the hour ma­rk, how­ever, Man­chester Uni­ted gaf­fer Sir Al­ex Fer­guson ev­entually de­cided to re­place Nani wi­th Paul Scho­les and the ever­green mid­field vet­er­an went on to have a great ga­me for Uni­ted. Six min­utes la­ter, tho­ugh, Man­chester City ace Ser­gio Aguero ma­naged to be­at away net­mind­er An­ders Linde­gaard from clo­se ran­ge to re­duce the de­fi­cit to 3-2 and The Blues pressed hard for an equal­iser as the clock ticked down, but Uni­ted kept the des­per­ate ho­me si­de at bay to re­cord a nar­row vic­tory.
