Manchester United had defeated Orient, Millwall, Portsmouth, and Cardiff City, and drawn to Nottingham Forest in their five first matches of the 1974-75 season and were sitting top of the table ahead of the fixture against West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns. The Midlanders began the better and raced into an early lead in the sixth minute of the clash thanks to a goal from former England U18 defender Alan Merrick. Manchester United gradually came more into the game and equalised two minutes past the half-hour mark when West Bromwich shot stopper Peter Latchford failed to hold a low cross from Willie Morgan and Stuart Pearson was there to score. Despite drawing to West Brom, The Reds remained top of the table ahead of Norwich City on goal difference.
