Third pla­ced Man­chester Uni­ted equal­ised twice to earn them­selves a 2-2 draw ag­ainst re­leg­a­tion threat­ened West Ham Uni­ted at Boleyn Gro­und. Frank Stapleton and sec­ond ha­lf sub­sti­tute Bry­an Rob­son sco­red the goals for the vis­it­ing team.

Man­chester Uni­ted locked horns wi­th West Ham Uni­ted on­ly six days af­ter knock­ing The Ham­mers out of the FA Cup. Ron Atkinson´s title chasers had soundly de­feated West Ham to the tune of a 5-0 score in the re­verse Fir­st Di­vi­sion fix­ture of the 1984-85 sea­son thro­ugh goals by Gor­don Mc­Queen, Alan Brazil, Gor­don Stra­chan, Remi Moses, and Ma­rk Hug­hes, but the Old Traf­ford te­am had to settle for a draw this time. The East Lon­don club got them­selves ahead cour­tesy of Scot­tish de­fender Ray Stew­art who be­at Old Traf­ford shot stop­per Ga­ry Bai­ley from the pen­alty spot in the 25th min­ute of the clash. Man­chester Uni­ted hit back shortly af­ter­wards, tho­ugh, as Re­pub­lic of Ire­land in­ter­na­tion­al stri­ker Frank Stapleton fou­nd the back of the net five min­utes la­ter. West Ham re­gained their ad­vant­age when Three Li­ons de­fender Mi­ke Dux­bury ma­naged to put the ball pa­st his own goal­keeper and in­to net ten min­utes in­to the sec­ond ha­lf, on­ly for Man­chester Uni­ted to equal­ise for a sec­ond time as Nor­man White­side re­place­ment Bry­an Rob­son head­ed ho­me a well-taken cor­ner-kick by Dan­ish flanker Jes­per Ol­sen in the 68th min­ute of the clash. As the clock ticked on, The Irons pressed high up the pitch look­ing for a third goal, but time ran out and the tie ended in a 2-2 draw.
