Manchester United locked horns with West Ham United only six days after knocking The Hammers out of the FA Cup. Ron Atkinson´s title chasers had soundly defeated West Ham to the tune of a 5-0 score in the reverse First Division fixture of the 1984-85 season through goals by Gordon McQueen, Alan Brazil, Gordon Strachan, Remi Moses, and Mark Hughes, but the Old Trafford team had to settle for a draw this time. The East London club got themselves ahead courtesy of Scottish defender Ray Stewart who beat Old Trafford shot stopper Gary Bailey from the penalty spot in the 25th minute of the clash. Manchester United hit back shortly afterwards, though, as Republic of Ireland international striker Frank Stapleton found the back of the net five minutes later. West Ham regained their advantage when Three Lions defender Mike Duxbury managed to put the ball past his own goalkeeper and into net ten minutes into the second half, only for Manchester United to equalise for a second time as Norman Whiteside replacement Bryan Robson headed home a well-taken corner-kick by Danish flanker Jesper Olsen in the 68th minute of the clash. As the clock ticked on, The Irons pressed high up the pitch looking for a third goal, but time ran out and the tie ended in a 2-2 draw. West Ham United Team: Tom McAlister, Paul Hilton, Paul Brush, Neil Orr, Steve Walford, Ray Stewart, Alvin Martin, Alan Dickens, Paul Allen, Paul Goddard, Tony Cottee. Substitute: David Swindlehurst.
