Man­chester United´s frus­trat­ingly in­con­sist­ent form con­tin­ued as they suf­fered a nar­row and un­ne­ces­sary 2-1 de­feat ag­ainst re­leg­a­tion threat­ened West Ham Uni­ted in East London.

Man­chester Uni­ted came in­to this fix­ture on the back of a 2-1 win ag­ainst Sto­ke City at Vic­tor­ia Gro­und, where­as West Ham Uni­ted had beaten Ever­ton 1-0 at Good­ison Park in their pre­vi­ous mat­ch. At Up­ton Park, The East Lon­doners flew in­to an early lead thanks to a goal from Ge­off Hurst in the fourth min­ute of the clash and the hosts doubled their ad­vant­age when for­mer New­castle Uni­ted for­ward Bry­an “Pop” Rob­son fou­nd the back of the net just six min­utes la­ter. Man­chester Uni­ted were awar­ded a pen­alty la­ter in the fir­st ha­lf, but the nor­mally de­pend­able Wil­lie Mor­gan had his spot-kick saved by West Ham goal­keeper Bob­by Fer­guson. Fol­low­ing the re­sump­tion, Man­chester Uni­ted ma­naged to peg a goal back thro­ugh Ge­orge Best in the 56th min­ute of the en­counter, but wi­th no more goals to come the ga­me ended wi­th a 2-1 ho­me vic­tory for The Ham­mers.
