Man­chester Uni­ted had de­feated Ful­ham, Der­by Coun­ty, Liver­pool, Ever­ton, and Sun­der­land in their pre­vi­ous five Pre­mier Lea­gue fix­tures and were sit­ting top of the ta­ble ahead of the meet­ing wi­th The Irons. The Old Traf­ford club went in front when Por­tuguese in­ter­na­tion­al Cris­ti­ano Ron­aldo be­at West Ham and Eng­land goal­keeper Ro­bert Green wi­th a head­er from a Ry­an Gig­gs cross on thir­teen min­utes. In the sec­ond ha­lf, Man­chester Uni­ted were awar­ded a pen­alty af­ter a cross had hit Jon­athan Spect­or on the arm, but the nor­mally re­li­able Ron­aldo missed from the spot. The pen­alty miss gave West Ham re­newed hope and the East Lon­doners fi­nally ma­naged to equal­ise as Ant­on Fer­dinand con­ver­ted a cor­ner from skip­per Ma­rk Noble in the 78th min­ute of the clash. Spurred on by Noble, The Ham­mers kept up the pres­sure and the hosts had their win­ner when Mat­thew Up­son head­ed ho­me a free-kick from the Up­ton Park cap­tain wi­th eight min­ute left of nor­mal time.
