Sir Al­ex Ferguson´s men dom­in­ated from the out­set and went in­to the lead a min­ute pa­st the ha­lf-hour ma­rk thro­ugh a clo­se ran­ge fin­ish from Ma­rk Robins. Uni­ted kept up the pres­sure and doubled their ad­vant­age four min­utes la­ter when Ste­ve Bru­ce ham­mered ho­me from a few yards out af­ter the ball had be­en cleared off the line. Af­ter de­feat­ing Wrex­ham at Race­course Gro­und, Uni­ted would now face French club Mont­pel­li­er in the quart­er-fi­nals of the Euro­pean Cup Win­ners´ Cup.
